After visiting Bilbao, Professor Conny continued her route towards Santiago de Compostela. The days after Bilbao were very windy and rainy, and Professor Conny often had to wear her rain poncho. The roads and paths she had to take during these days were not that interesting: mainly long roads along the coast, sometimes alternating with paths over the beaches and short climbs and descents.
During one of these rainy days, Professor Conny took a half-rest day. She walked a shorter route of about 16 kilometres and then gave her ankle a break for the afternoon. Professor Conny is trying to take good care of her ankle and to rest when needed so she will not get injured again…

During her 1200 kilometre walk to Santiago de Compostela, Professor Conny sleeps in a different place every night. In most albergues it is not possible to reserve a bed. This means that you have to arrive in time to have a place to sleep for the night. If you do not arrive in time, you have to walk on to the next pilgrims’ inn and hope there is a place for you there. Certain albergues are special due to the building in which they are housed, for example some are in castles, or based on their location along the route. This makes them more wanted than others. One of the things Professor Conny does to reach the next albergue in time to get a bed is to start her walk very early in the morning. When she starts walking at seven in the morning she aims to arrive at the albergue around two in the afternoon. This strategy often leads directly to a place to sleep for Professor Conny.

Professor Conny is now walking the Camino del Norte, the coastal route towards Santiago de Compostela. She will follow this route for 450 kilometres. The coastal route has great views over the Atlantic Ocean and Professor Conny has walked over several beaches. The weather is changing every other day, from rainy-windy days to sunny, clear, blue-sky days back to rainy-windy days again.
