Day 5, 6, 7 and 8: From goat farm to party room

179/1200 km

Over the previous few days Professor Conny had been spoiled by calm and sunny weather. Day 5 is completely different. It rains all day with very heavy showers in the afternoon.

Professor Conny walks 24 kilometres in the rain from Bourriot-Bergonce to Larousse, via Roquefort and Corbleu. She has plans to see the frescos in the chapel of Lugaut, but the chapel is closed. Corbleu has a small old church as well. That too is closed.

The final stop for the day is a goat farm. In fact, the pilgrim’s inn for the night is located on the goat farm. Professor Conny takes a path through the forest to reach the farm, where she gets to help feed the young goats.

Day 6 is another rainy day. Professor Conny walks 22 kilometres and has to wear her rain poncho most of the time. Around noon the sun finally comes out and Professor Conny can enjoy her lunch in the sun. After lunch she continues her walk to the pilgrim’s inn. Unfortunately it only opens at four o’clock, so she has to wait one and a half hours. She decides to have a look in Mont-de-Marsan, where she visits the keep and the church of the Madeline.

A bit of sunshine on a rainy day

Professor Conny has to wake up early the next day because she has to leave the pilgrim’s inn at eight in the morning. Her first stop of the day is the church of Benquet, where she has a coffee break. Luckily, it is not raining at that moment.

The route Professor Conny walks today takes her through mostly flat terrain and along straight paths. This will change in the coming days as she approaches the Pyrenees.

On Wednesday Professor Conny leaves early again to walk a longer route: 29 kilometres! In Saint Sever she has breakfast at the bakery and starts walking towards the village of Horsarrieu. The paths are steeper than those of the day before, and when she walks out of the village she can see the Pyrenees at last. She can even see the snowy tops of the mountains. The weather is clear and very sunny: 17 degrees Celsius!

Next stop is Hagetmau. Professor Conny looks for a place to buy some lunch, but does not find one, and there is no supermarket close to the track she is walking. Luckily she is carrying a dried emergency meal.

Late in the afternoon a tired Professor Conny reaches her destination for the day: Beyries. In Beyries she can stay in the town hall. There are four beds for pilgrims in the party room of the town hall, but she has the whole place for herself tonight.
